It has layers of paint and lacquer built up over many years of use, some of which have worn away giving it a wonderful feeling of age. The doors have scenes of an official or courtly nature painted on them. They have at some point been minimally vandalized, most likely during the time of Mao. This was done to preserve the piece, as vandalized pieces were spared destruction in the time
